Diesel Trucks
Monday, July 04, 2005
Yesterday, we went shopping for THE truck. We are narrowing down our choices within the framework of our needs, budget, and desires.
#1 in the running is a 2005 Chevrolet C4500.
ooooooo.....ahhhhhhh
Unfortunately, Buy Blue was not able to help with this planned purchase because the "Blue" manufacturers don't make large diesels. Toyota has plans for year 2008.

oh, something most people don't know re diesels:
yes, they generate a lot of low-rev power. however, they are just as inefficient as petrol engines at low revs, plus a lot more polluting.
when you drive a diesel, rev it. keep it in its powerband. and notice when you service it that the oil is near-pristine, rather than black.

Hey Sal,
There is still time to downgrade from our current plan. I'm toying with the idea.
We will not be putting a camper on top; but rather pulling a 5th wheel behind; and it won't work to haul my printers outdoors. Because we will live it in fulltime, cramped quarters make me squirm. Still, the simple life is our goal. Just how simple we get without losing our grip is the question.
About diesel pollution: yes, it is absoluately filthy. I'm told biodiesel is a whole different story. I'm shooting for cleaner air with the biodiesel plan.
Thanks so much for your comments.

having done a lap of the baltic in a coach-built campervan, i wouldn't buy this truck. you don't need a big engine-- you're going to be relaxing. get a little diesel (i pulled 3 tons with 1.3 litres), a bloody comfy rear sit-in bit, and an inside toilet. then all the basics. and you know? that's all you need for a superb holiday.
if you plan to be working out of it/at it, get a heavyduty sealable awning and an outdoor heater for winter and work outside. lovely.
